According to Part 118 of the Administrative Rules of the Unified Court System & Uniform Rules of the Trial Courts, every attorney admitted to practice in New York Stat, whether resident or nonresident, and whether or not in good standing, shall file a registration statement with the Chief Administrator of the Courts within 60 days of the date of such admission, and during each alternate year thereafter, within 30 days after the attorney's birthday, for as long as the attorney remains duly admitted to the New York bar.
Section 468-a of the NY Judiciary Law and 22 NYCRR Part 118 of the Rules of the Chief Administrator of the Courts require the biennial registration of all attorneys admitted in the State of New York, whether they are resident or non-resident, active or retired, or practicing law in New York or elsewhere. All attorneys are required to renew their attorney registration every two years, within 30 days after their birthday.
Except for certain cases, the information contained in the registration statement filed shall be made available to the public.
This dataset includes all registered attorneys admitted in NYS, whether they are resident or non-resident, active or retired, or practicing law in NY or anywhere else.
The disclosed information for each attorney includes Registration Number, First Name, Middle Name, Last Name, Suffix, Company Name,
Street Address, City, County, Country, Business Telephone Number, Year Admitted to the NYS Bar, Judicial Department of Admission, Law School from which degree was granted, the registration status of the attorney, Next Registration month and year.
To give New Yorkers the access they deserve to government data and information, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo launched the Open NY initiative in March 2013 and signed Executive Order 95. It directs state agencies to identify, catalog, and publish their data on the state's open data website administered by the Office of Information Technology Services (ITS).
Open NY increases transparency, improves government performance, empowers New Yorkers to participate in government, and encourages research and economic opportunities statewide.

There are over 300,000 attorneys admitted in New York State, who are required to register with the Office of Court Administration of NYS Unified Court System.
Most NYS attorneys are working in law firms. The top companies employing the most NYS attorneys are LATHAM & WATKINS LLP,
KIRKLAND & ELLIS LLP, WHITE & CASE LLP, THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY, DAVIS POLK & WARDWELL LLP, and SIDLEY AUSTIN LLP, each employing more than 600 attorneys.
Government agencies (such as New York City Law Department) and financial institutes (such as Morgan Stanley) also employ many NYS attorneys.
While a majority of NYS attorneys obtained degrees from law schools in New York City, such as Brooklyn Law School, New York Law School, Columbia University (Columbia Law School), New York University (School of Law), Fordham University (School of Law), St. John's University, Yeshiva University (Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law),
there are also many graduates of Harvard University (Harvard Law School), Albany Law School, Georgetown University (Law Center), Cornell Unversity (Law School), Boston University.
Over 30% of NYS attorneys are working in New York City; there are also many attorneys working in Washington (4.5%), Albany (1.3%), Buffalo (1.3%), White Plains (1.2%) and Boston (1%).
There are also many attorneys from foreign countries admitted in NYS, including China (3279), Japan (3130), United Kingdom (2701), Canada (2016), Korea (1751), Hong Kong (1414), France (1400), Germany (1032).
The total number of attorneys noticeably decreased in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic; it dropped by over 10% in 2020 (from 6679 in 2019 to 5948) and dropped again by 19% in 2021.
In 2022, the number of attorneys is at the same level as in 2021, 30% below the 2015-2018 level, and 40% below the 2009-2014 level.
We expect to see more attorneys admitted in the upcoming years as the economy reovers from the pandemic.
